Feeling ridiculously good - happy, lucky, contented good, not hyper, stimulant-fuelled good - this New Year's Eve. No particular reason - it's just feeling more important this year than any other so far to feel lucky that my life's in a good place, with a prickling feeling about those whose life isn't.
We're chez nous tonight, as usual, having a blast of popcorn, great music, probably some Jools Holland, some sparklers, and definitely the London fireworks on tv at midnight. And a splendidly undisturbed lie-in in the morning. 6 Music's been on all afternoon - bah humbug to whichever government, tory or labour, had the daft idea to try to axe it.
To everyone who has put up with my random thoughts this year, inspired me, made me laugh, made me cry - a massive thank you, and I hope next year will be everything it should be, and more.*
Much love xx
* of course, we will ignore the 3 weeks or whatever length of boredom that shall be the olympics ;)

M Is For Music, Moon, Mess... And Mooching
Day 4 of The Ridiculous Amount Of Activity here: out with the washing first thing, enjoying the still calmness, the birds cheeping in the surrounding trees, the blue sky and the green leaves... then helping to get the 12 year old off to school, instead of me having to rush about like most weekday mornings the rest of the year.
Music to kickstart the wall-sanding has been the Mamas and Papas, who I love so much I've played them loads this week. How like the B52's the girls' harmonies are on some of the tracks... Now I'm playing Generation Terrorist, the first Manics cd, prompted by a story online this morning about Richey's sister and the missing person's charity.
Did anyone see last night's lunar eclipse? I'm never clued up beforehand, so missed it yet again. My friend posts on facebook when one's due - but I'm usually a day behind catching up on there. Maybe there's some email alert you can sign up to...? Anyhow, the film online of the eclipse looks very wow and ravishing. Had a very strange dream last night about being able to see fish in the sky - like you see stars in the daytime sometimes, these fish were swimming all over the place. It was the bottom of the sea in Australia, that joined into the top of our sky here... sort of an inverted version of how the world's made up.
A bit more sanding and painting of a small bit of wall under the kitchen window, then the room is FINISHED!!! Apart from the floor - hhhmmm - and a missing kickboard for the sink cabinet. I was sure I'd put the old one in the shed somewhere, but rooting through there the other day I just ended up with a big plank of wood falling on my knee. Big purple bruise now.... just right for summer frock attire!
The reason its taken til today to get the kitchen finished is because I keep sloping off to cafes and charity shops with the boyfriend - lots of good finds, I'll put pictures up on Saturday. If I stop and do that now, I'll never get the bloomin' kitchen done ;)

A Birthday, A Film and The Sound Of Music
Some things get done, and some never do, and others get done a very long time after they should have. A rough system by which life usually ticks by quite nicely. Not sure which category filling in the census form will fall into. Half-minded to put some fairly impossible answers in, just to add to the dodgy legacy that the human race is already leaving for future generations....
Anyhows, a prime example of the above is that we now have sound on the computer again! Hurrah! I swear I hang to the 21st century by the merest thread, such is the frequency of times that my life ends up back in the technological era of the 70s and 80s.... The computer used to work without speakers, then would only work with headphones, then died acoustically altogether. The last 2 states coincided with my having un-cabled everything computer-related to move the room around twice. Hence the flawed logic that getting round to repeating the process a 3rd time but without the furniture moving would solve the problem. I did the cables. Zilch. I plugged in the speakers (that we'd never bothered to connect up). We got Lady Gaga, the track the 12 year old had put on for soundcheck purposes. Mornings with 6 Music on! Hurrah!
And yes, he is now 12! A birthday in the house yesterday, envelopes ripped open with the sole intent to create 19,000 pieces of paper where 3 seconds ago there had been one, lots of popcorn, chocolates, a big cake, candles... and we finished off the evening watching Despicable Me. Its lovely! A big guy with a squashed head, pointy nose and skinny legs who does Bad Things To The World, but does all these things because his mum gave him an inferiority complex. He owns a dog that is part cactus, part crocodile, and lives in a big, black house (anyone remember Winnie the Witch?!!). Daft, cute, hilarious things happen, all fantastically animated, with a bit of Russell Brand and even Julie Andrews thrown in. It even starts off with a bit of Girl From Ipanema.... And,of course, there's a Happy Ending.
